Imagine a journey that takes you through lush jungles, ancient ruins, and the heart of indigenous cultures. The Lost City Trek in Colombia offers all this and more. Promising an unforgettable four-day expedition that combines natural beauty, physical challenge, and cultural immersion. This is exactly why I chose to do it. What better way to explore a country than to hike through the remote part that offers history and amazing views!
Day 1: Embarking on the Adventure
As the sun rises over Santa Marta, you’ll set out on a journey that promises to be unlike any other. This will be with one of the companies of your choosing. Note – there are only 5 companies allowed to guide you through this tour, and although they are all very similar, I would urge you to do some research and choose the one you are most comfortable with.
The first day involves a transport from the city to the trailhead, followed by a 3-5 hour hike through the captivating landscapes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The day’s journey concludes after hiking approx 14km, with an overnight stay on the trail. it’s a long day first day of constant climbing. Although the climbing isn’t too bad, the heat is something to think about. With temperatures ranging from the high 20s to mid-30s Celsius, it’s crucial to bring good sun protection and plenty of water.
Day 2: Conquering Challenges and Reveling in Rewards
Day two introduces hikers to the true essence of the Lost City Trek. A challenging 7-9 hour hike (14 km) takes you through diverse terrains, from dense jungles to steep ascents. Your efforts are met with breathtaking panoramic views, a reminder that every step forward brings you closer to both the destination and the beauty of nature. The physical challenges you overcome on this day are equaled by the sense of accomplishment and awe-inspiring landscapes. Once again the day concludes in an established structure with enough bunk beds to sleep everyone on the adventure. Each bunk bed shelter with its own bug mesh. Allowing you to get some well-deserved rest
Day 3: Unveiling the Lost City
A shorter hike on the third day leads you to the highlight of the trek—the Lost City itself. After a 1-2 hour hike and 1200 steps, you’ll stand before the ancient ruins of this Pre-Colombian marvel. The Lost City’s history and grandeur unfold before your eyes, providing a glimpse into the lives of its former inhabitants. Following the exploration, the journey continues with 6-8 hours of hiking ( approx 18km), offering a harmonious blend of historical immersion and natural beauty. This is by far the most challenging day, as you will experience a lot of climbing, walking around exploring, and finally coming back down.
By the end of the day, the overwhelming number of mosquitos, humidity, and constant downhill will make you glad there is a bed waiting for you, fully protected from mosquitos and in slighter cooler weather.
Day 4: Reflection and Return
The final day’s journey begins with a pre-dawn start, as hikers embark on a 5-7 hour hike back to the trailhead. This phase of the trek is marked by reflection and contemplation. Since this trail is an out-and-back, you’ll be retracing your steps through the lush landscapes. You’ll carry with you a sense of achievement and a deep connection to the environment. Having learned about the history, the culture and witnessing these monumental structures, will leave you wanting to learn more.
